Comment on There’s more to eParticipation than Facebook by Andy Williamson https://pep-net.eu/blog/2011/05/19/theres-more-to-eparticipation-than-facebook/comment-page-1/#comment-37144 Wed, 22 Aug 2012 16:15:53 +0000 https://pep-net.eu/?p=3904#comment-37144 Hi John, I think you’re right. Commercial SNS like Facebook are a vital tool as they are perfect for spreading a message, recruitment and building social capital over the longer term. But they are inherently poor places for high quality engagement to occur. It’s pretty clear to me from my work that we need both public networks and proprietary platforms (not saying they can’t be built on open platforms, just proprietary in terms of purpose and content).

It was founded in 2006 and is the oldest Spanish NGO devoted to the promotion of (e)Participation. In the last years we were researching on the field of Civic Engagement and ICT, with a special focus on Latin-America and Europe. Our work combines a critical attitude with an applied, hands-on focus, and has (1) theorized about Civic Engagement, (2) analysed the best design practices for (e)Participation systems, as well as (3) analysed the difficulties that exist to promote innovation in the ICT for Governance field. Our research has been widely recognized as refreshing and insightful. […]
